Newsletter #2

Yesterday, I was looking into a dark cupboard, and I thought, I’ll illuminate it with the screen of the phone I’m holding. But I wasn’t holding my phone. I was holding a book. I held up the pages of the book in my hand to light up the dark cupboard.

So that’s the state of my mind this week.

Hello, and welcome to my second newsletter. I skipped last week because hypermobility-related muscle problems had me on diazepam, so I’m not sure it would have made any sense if I’d tried.

WHAT’S NEW, JAMIE????

I’m so glad you asked!

  • First, I got my copies of WicDiv Vol 9, the final collection. It looks like this:

    Mm, gothy.

It comes out the first week of October. The final hardcover will be out in the first half of next year, for those of you who wait on them.

  • Thirdly, Kieron and I did a big WicDiv exit interview with excellent human/writer Evan Narcisse over at io9. It was a good chat.

Beyond that, it’s been a week of attempted recovery (not super successful, tbh, but baby steps), reading, research, and house-guests. We were talking about the books we’ve been reading and enjoying lately and so a sample of them ended up being pulled from the bookshelves:

I don’t think you’d go wrong with any of the authors above. I’d also throw in THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR by by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. I’m currently reading, and loving, THE OUTSIDE by Ada Hoffman. As you can tell, my reading leans Space Opera-heavy right now, as that’s where my writing mind is at and I’m interested in the current lay of the land.

WHAT ELSE ARE YOU ENJOYING, JAMIE????

Wow, it’s like you read my mind! I was just about to tell you.

The new METRONOMY album came out last week and I love it. It feels like Joe’s looking back at his earlier stuff here, but that makes it sound more nostalgic than it is. I am looking forward to playing Salted Caramel Ice Cream at whatever party I play records at next. And thanks Gbenga for the cross-promotion.

Also good is the new MUNA album.

I finished CONTROL, and loved it. I wish it could have got a bit weirder - it explains too much too soon for me - but the pressures of AAA games are different, so I’m not too grumpy about it. Plus, there’s a sequence two thirds of the way into the game that is just flat-out one of my favourite sections in a game, ever.

We’ve started watching Undone on Prime, thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It’s the new show by Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, who previously worked on BoJack Horseman. We’re a couple of episodes in, and the premise and animation is intriguing, but what keeps us coming back is the fantastic writing involving Alma and her family.

That’s it for now. I’ll be back next week with more details on our upcoming NYCC trip and uh, something else, I think. I think it’s next week. It might not be so don’t get your hopes up.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Jamie

PS Two Bruce photos, as we missed last week.
